💸 The Bolívar Fuerte was the official currency of Venezuela from 2008 to 2018. Its name means “Strong Bolívar,” and it was introduced as part of a monetary reform aimed at fighting inflation and restoring confidence in the national economy.
🇻🇪 The Bolívar Fuerte replaced the old Venezuelan bolívar at a rate of 1,000 old bolívares = 1 Bolívar Fuerte. This change was launched under the government of Hugo Chávez, and new banknotes and coins were issued by the Banco Central de Venezuela.
At first, the reform helped simplify prices and transactions. However, over time, Venezuela faced severe economic challenges, including hyperinflation. As inflation increased dramatically, the Bolívar Fuerte lost much of its purchasing power, and larger banknotes had to be printed just to keep up with rising prices.
💵 In 2018, the Bolívar Fuerte was replaced by a new currency called the Bolívar Soberano, removing five more zeros from the money system. This marked the end of the Bolívar Fuerte era after just ten years in circulation.
Today, the Bolívar Fuerte is remembered as a symbol of Venezuela’s economic struggle and one of the shortest-lived currencies in the country’s history.
