᭼ Tower Bridge - a London icon, and a marvel of Victorian engineering.
᭼ Built under the watch of Sir John Wolfe Barry, it took eight years, five major contractors, and over 400 workers a day to bring it to life.
᭼ It was officially opened on June 30th, 1894, by Edward, Prince of Wales, and Princess Alexandra.
᭼ Back then, it cost just over £1.1 million - a sum that would exceed £150 million today.
᭼ At the time of its completion, Tower Bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule Bridge ᭼ ever created ('bascule' comes from the French word for 'seesaw')
᭼ The bridge still lifts for passing ships - around 850 times a year, each lift taking only 5 minutes.
᭼ Originally powered by steam hydraulics, it was later modernised with electricity.
