On April 22, 2025, a routine US Navy personnel transfer turned into a dangerous confrontation when Chinese frigate Yuncheng deliberately rammed a small American utility boat carrying 12 crew members in the South China Sea.
The incident occurred 12 nautical miles east of Scarborough Shoal as the 32-foot tender "Tender-7" was transiting between USS Miguel Keith and USS New Orleans. The Chinese Type 054A frigate emerged from morning haze and executed a calculated intercept course, ignoring all evasion attempts by the American helmsman.
Despite desperate maneuvering, the Chinese warship's superior speed and mass closed the distance from 2,000 yards to direct impact. The collision damaged the US boat's port hull, leaving 12 Americans stranded as a second Chinese frigate, Xuzhou, arrived to block rescue attempts.
The confrontation escalated into a four-ship standoff with both US vessels unable to reach their damaged boat, trapped between two Chinese warships in a dangerous game of maritime chess.
