If Bobby Fischer was the captain of the Titanic, he would have definitely saved that ship from sinking.
That’s exactly what happened in Game 9 of My 60 Memorable Games. Facing the Swiss master Edgar Walther, the young Bobby Fischer played the Sicilian Najdorf, one of his favorite weapons. Walther chose the sharp Bg5 line, immediately testing Fischer’s preparation.
Things quickly went wrong for Fischer. He delayed castling and overlooked a key move, landing himself in a horrible position. For much of the game, it looked like Fischer was going to suffer a crushing defeat — but as always, he refused to give up.
The game simplified into an opposite-colored bishops endgame, which is notorious for its huge drawing tendencies. Even though Fischer had misplayed earlier, this endgame dynamic became his lifeline. Walther missed the critical winning idea, and Fischer escaped with half a point.
This game is not about Fischer’s brilliance, but about his tenacity, resourcefulness, and ability to survive even when things go completely wrong. It shows why Fischer was not only a genius attacker, but also a fighter who would never go down easily.
In this video, I break down:
The Sicilian Najdorf with Bg5 variation
Fischer’s early mistake and how it could have been punished
The instructive nature of opposite-colored bishop endings
Why drawing chances exist even in the worst positions
This is Game 9 of Bobby Fischer’s legendary book My 60 Memorable Games and it’s a lesson in survival, resilience, and never giving up.
