The efforts of authoritarian states to suppress dissent are not territorially limited. Over the past few years, there have been many notable cases of transnational repression—states applying repressive policies to silence or coerce nationals located outside their territorial borders—including the Saudi killing of Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey.
As researchers at the Citizen Lab, we now investigate how activists and dissidents living in Canada are impacted by digital transnational repression: the various ways that individuals continue to be harassed and targeted online by authoritarian governments, even after they leave their country of origin.
In our report, Psychological and Emotional War: Digital Transnational Repression in Canada, we conclude that digital transnational repression has a serious impact on activists and dissidents living in Canada, including their ability to undertake transnational advocacy work related to human rights.
