A goalscoring legend at Stoke City. Big John started his career with Kettering in 1960, scoring 40 goals in 76 games before being spotted by Tony Waddington in 1962. He netted 30 goals in his first full season (1963/64) then struck another 29 (1964/65). After four years at the Victoria Ground he was surprisingly sold to Sheffield Wednesday in 1966. After three years and 45 goals for the Owls Tony Waddington re-signed him in 1969. His goalscoring inspired one of our most successful periods in the early seventies, including a League Cup win in 1972 and a fifth placed finish in 1974. He started the 1974/75 season in fine form, scoring four in his first seven games before a leg break ended his career in September. Stoke again finished fifth, four points behind eventual champions Derby County. Many supporters feel we may well have won the league if not deprived of Ritchie's goals.
