The International Longshoremens' Association is leading a strike to demand higher wages and promises of job security as opposed to automations replacing human labor. They have no intention of ending their strike. President Biden could end the strike under the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, which allows a strike to be required to end in the case that it could cause a national emergency. In this case, a potential national emergency would be a significant delay and shortage of goods, as well as spoiled perishables. The strike will have a significant economic impact as well, and may exacerbate inflation for imported goods.
