CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio (Sydney Benter) -- A Friday football tradition was put on hold at West Clermont high schools.
Principals at both Glen Este and Amelia high schools told cheerleaders Thursday that they couldn't wear their uniforms to class Friday. Cheer parents said the girls should be able to show team spirit, but administrators told Local 12 it was just a matter of following school dress code.
The dress code stipulates that shorts, skirts and dresses can't be higher than mid-thigh. The administration said uniforms weren't always meant for the classroom.
"Cheerleaders when they're at the game, at a sporting event, it's very appropriate to wear their uniforms. However, in the school--in the classroom--football players don't wear their pads, they don't wear their gear. Cheerleaders shouldn't be wearing their uniforms at this point," said Debbie Alberico, West Clermont Communications Consultant.
Local 12 called around to other schools in Clermont County and their policies were all different. Some allow their cheerleaders to wear uniforms to class on game days, while others, like West Clermont, suggest cheerleaders wear their warmups.
West Clermont administrators acknowledged that the dress code in the student handbook needs updating. They would like to form a committee of teachers and students to make some changes.
