Why I QUIT Dentistry to be a BROKE med student

As a graduate dentist I earned….

100k in public, but private dentists can earn up to 200k. That’s already in your first two years!

When I graduated, I had those two options ahead of me…
But I decided to do Medicine and become a doctor as well (kind of silly as I write all this out)

After up to 6 years of medical school you then earn a whole lot less ~80k with EXTRA long days that end at 11pm and work weekends which you DO NOT get extra money for. (No overtime pay in New Zealand)

If I could go back, would I do it again?

Absolutely. Why?

Community. The community you get working as a doctor and the team environment is priceless. You feel one with your profession. It feels more like a calling.

Learning. The endless learning opportunities as research CONTINUOUSLY develops is so cool. We can NEVER stop learning. As a nerd, I’ll always want to learn things!

Holistic care. Understanding how to manage patients as a WHOLE and connecting with them as humans on multiple levels is so fulfilling.

Being a Dentist is great also - autonomy of your work life, continuity of care for your patients and being financially stable earlier is such a bonus.

Now in my 2nd year to do surgery - to save everyone the anxiety, confusion and stress that I went through I’ve written a small interactive story.

I feel if you can understand YOURSELF it’s easy to make the right decisions.
