While I work on getting all the editing and assembly done for the big Jaguar omnibus videos (just getting to '88 took over an hour of finished recording time...), there will also be shorter examinations of each prototype, starting with the Group 44-run and built XJR-5. Jaguar's return to prototype racing came not from Coventry, but from Virginia. This is the story of how Bob Tullius and Group 44 convinced a company losing a million pounds per week that racing could save them, built a competitive GTP car around the venerable V12, and took Jaguar back to Le Mans for the first time in over two decades.
Lee Dykstra's clever exploitation of the narrow 60-degree V12 to create massive venturi tunnels, the 1984 Le Mans debut where larger fuel tanks briefly put them in the lead, and the 1985 triumph of finishing 13th overall running on eleven cylinders after a valve went through the piston—this is the XJR-5.
Not bad for a bunch of colonials, all things considered.
