"Jig Green" was a specific sector of Gold Beach in Normandy, where Allied forces landed during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.
Gold Beach was one of the five landing zones in the Normandy invasion, and Jig Beach, along with King Beach, was part of the British landing area.
Gold Beach:
This was the central British and Canadian landing area during D-Day, stretching from Ver-sur-Mer to Arromanches.
Jig Beach:
This sector was west of King Beach and east of Item Beach, and it was subdivided into Jig Green and Jig Red.
Jig Green:
Specifically, Jig Green was the area where the 231st Brigade landed at Le Hamel, facing significant German defenses.
D-Day:
On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces, including British troops, landed on Gold Beach.
Importance of Jig Green:
While the landing on Gold Beach was relatively successful compared to Omaha Beach, the advance inland at Le Hamel in the Jig sector was slow and involved heavy fighting due to the strong German defenses.
