NYU Stern Professor Sinziana Dorobantu’s research highlights the importance of firms obtaining the social license to operate.

Across a number of industries, more and more firms are being targeted by social activist movements. Professor Dorobantu’s projects examine the financial value of a firm's social license to operate and the conditions under which firms are more likely to invest in obtaining this license.

So, what can companies do?

The answer involves stakeholder engagement strategies that allow company representatives and community members to converge
on a shared understanding. Stakeholder engagement involves meetings
that allow interested parties to exchange their views seek to understand the other, and align on how an investment would be developed and when community approval is key, it makes sense for companies and communities to negotiate a contract that clarifies expectations and spells out each parties responsibilities and obligations. Such contracts, known as community benefit agreements, are an effective, formal way of obtaining the social license to operate.
