Stay in Aguas Calientes for easy access to Machu Picchu. Approx 20 minutes by bus to the entrance to the Site of Machu Picchu. Advance ticket purchase required for Machu Picchu entrance (sells out months in advance) and the bus to the entrance (book one + days in advance). Everyone is required to have a passport for all ticket purchases, boarding transportation and entry to museums and sites. Note: Passports actually expire 6 months before the expiration date listed in your passport. Plan accordingly to avoid disappointment. You can also HIKE from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu. To avoid any surprises, we suggest you research and evaluate your abilities before selecting this option.

Aguas Calientes: 1,950 meters / 6,400 feet above sea level
Machu Picchu: 2,430 meters / 7,972 feet above sea level (depending what circuit you hike)

Day 1: We arrived by train at 3:30pm
Day 2 and 3: Visited Machu Picchu
Day 4: Departed by train at 11:00am

Transportation:
Train: PeruRail - (There are several train vendors.)
Bus to Machu Picchu site entrance: Book online or at bus station in Aguas Calientes.
Note: You can also hike to the entrance of Machu Picchu (Level: Strenuous in addition to altitude)

Practical tips before you book your trip:
Research, Research, Research!
Buy Machu Picchu entry tickets months in advance OR book a tour. Tickets sell out!
Everyones Passport is required to book ALL tickets and is required for all travel and entry to Machu Picchu.
Print out all tickets - don’t rely on digital
Strict Machu Picchu entry time, so book your bus accordingly
Book the Bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu site entrance one or more days in advance online or at bus station (or take a tour)
The bus ride is approximately 20 minutes, but you will line up 1 hour before departure time.
Go to the bathroom before entry! Only bathrooms are outside Machu Picchu entrance by snack bar and are pay toilets.

Canned Oxygen - sold at local stores (this really works for altitude sickness)
Sol coins for the Pay toilets
Sunscreen
Bugspray
Water
Rain Poncho

Food (water is OK)

Notes:
Trails are oneway - Research the hike/circuit(s) before going. You cannot backtrack to paths you missed.
Picture opportunities are generally early in the circuits and at the top of the ruins. Again, you cannot backtrack if you miss a photo.

Top places to go and things to see:
Circuit 1 - Visit the upper terraces and “THE” iconic photo spot overlooking the site. Add on hike to Inca bridge.
Circuit 2 - The Classic Circuit, takes visitors through the heart of the Inca city, including key structures.
Circuit 3 - Wander thru the main site to see the royal and religious areas up close. Add on hike to Huchuy picchu.
