The false statistic originated from a miscalculation of an April 2021 New England Journal of Medicine study, which actually reported an expected 12.6 percent miscarriage rate.

Social media platform X flagged Cruz's post with a community note, while political commentators and medical experts criticized the senator for spreading misinformation.

Fox Business issued a clarification after McClain repeated the false claim during an interview in which she called Dr. Anthony Fauci a criminal."
