We went for a gentle walk around the peaceful Hampshire village of Cheriton, in the heart of the Hampshire South Downs.
Cheriton has many Georgian Houses, and many thatched cottages.
Cheriton is a village and civil parish near Alresford in Hampshire, England. The village is perhaps most famous for being close to the site of the English Civil War Battle of Cheriton of 1644.
We passed the building that used to be the HH Inn, and at one time the landlord was Bob Copper, one of the greatest traditional folk singers of all time
The Source of the River Itchen is in the next parish of Kilmeston. The village has two distinct sections: Cheriton and New Cheriton which is beside the A272 half a mile from the main village.
The Church of England parish church dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. It was built during the 1100’s. It is situated on a small hill, almost certainly a prehistoric burial ground. The chancel was extended in the 15th century and the tower, porch and aisle walls were rebuilt following a fire in 1744. It is a Grade I listed building The stained glass windows in the Aisles are dedicated to local men who fell in The Great War.
We also met a very friendly ginger cat in the churchyard.
Once we finished our wander around the village, we headed to Upham for a pint in The Brushmakers Arms. Had a pint of Goodens Gold, brewed in Cheriton.
