A YouTube video about Smooth Hound Shark
The smooth-hound shark, also known as Mustelus, is a genus of sharks in the family Triakidae. The common smooth-hound is found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the British Isles to South Africa, and in the Mediterranean Sea, Madeira, and the Canary Islands at depths ranging from 5 to 625 m. Smooth-hounds are shallow water sharks that prefer sandy, shingle, and light broken ground, and tend to stay clear of heavy, rocky ground. They have powerful muscles in their jaws to allow them to crunch through hard-backed prey such as hermit crabs and squat lobsters. Smoothounds are sleek, silvery sharks with a highly sensory muzzle that feed on small invertebrates and fish which they pick up from the seabed. They give birth to live young and are not historically targeted by fishermen but are often caught as by-catch. Smoothounds are not often offered for sale in the UK and are not a good choice to go for as they are more vulnerable to fishing than most species of fish.
