Feral cats always surprise us! I had to give Hyatt a whopping dose of his yucky toxoplasmosis meds, and afterwards I uncovered his face because I wanted to see how he navigated himself back to the catio. Instead of immediately making a run for it, he stayed in my lap for quite awhile letting me pet him, enjoying it, remembering he was feral, forgetting he was feral, being annoyed, but not annoyed enough to move, etc. Mixed messages!
We are pushing Hyatt's socialization boundaries because he can't return to his home in the wild, and will need to learn to live happily with humans. As you can see, he enjoys interaction, but at the same time has very strong feral instincts telling him he is in danger.
