On October 15, 2025, activists from the Citizens Arrest Network attempted to place Mark Thurston, the CEO of Anglian Water, under a citizen's arrest at a London railway station. They detained him for nearly an hour, citing "public nuisance" charges related to sewage spills and corporate mismanagement. Details of the incident: Location: The activists surrounded Mark Thurston at Coulston South railway station at approximately 7 a.m.. Activists: A group of eight women from the Citizens Arrest Network formed a ring around Thurston, preventing him from boarding his train. Charges: The activists, led by spokeswoman Isobel Rock, accused Thurston and Anglian Water of three counts of "public nuisance," including environmental damage from illegal sewage spills and financial mismanagement. Motivation: The protest was aimed at holding water company executives accountable for pollution and rising customer bills while receiving large salaries and paying shareholder dividends.
Resolution: British Transport Police officers were called to the scene. They spoke with those involved, and the protest eventually dispersed.
The protest follows other recent actions by the Citizen's Arrest Network against water company executives. In March 2025, campaigners attempted to perform a citizen's arrest on executives at Thames Water for similar public nuisance charges.
