Come along with me to make my rose and seaweed face cream. I use this every night on my face and love it. This face cream has hyaluronic acid, vegetable ceramides, coenzyme q10, willow bark and lots of other good stuff for the face.
I'm using rose hydrosol to scent the lotion and keep it mild for sensitive skin. Rose essential oils can sometimes be irritating and overpowering and irritating and it contains eugenol which I try to avoid if I can.
I started formulating this lotion about a year ago and have made minor tweaks to perfect it.
One of my mishaps was adding sodium citrate in the water phase which completely split the emulsion. I now add sodium citrate to phase C at the cool down step and the emulsion has remained stable. Sodium citrate stabilizes the pH since I'm using neodefend as my preservative. There are not many options when you are trying to go the natural road and neodefend is one of the better preservatives out there that I use.
Some of the other natural preservatives contain benzyl alcohol and can give a slight almond aroma which I don't like to have in my final product. Unfortunately this limits my choices on what I can choose to preserve it naturally, but neodefend has been a good option. The only thing with this preservative is that prone to pH drift and sodium citrate prevents against this once you adjust the pH.
It's important to prevent pH drift as neodefend is effective at a certain pH usually between 5.2-5.5, which is a small margin to try to get it right. Anything outside of this pH could result in microbial growth which obviously you do not want on your face.
For this emulsion I use phase A as the oil phase and I'm using the emulsifier polyaquol 2W. I really like this emulsifier as it provides a nice creamy texture for the face cream. I also use camellia seed oil which is not heat sensitive in the oil phase.
Phase B includes all of my water soluble ingredients. I sent the product with rose hydrosol which has the nicest faint rose scent. I also include niacinamide, panthenol, glycerin and distilled water as well as low molecular weight hyaluronic acid.
Phase C includes willow bark, coenzyme q10, ceramides, vitamin E, oat oil and all of my heat sensitive ingredients. I also put sodium citrate in this phase as it doesn't break my emulsion. I found out the hard way that putting sodium citrate in the water phase will completely shatter my emulsion. It's all trial and error which is why I love doing this. you can put sodium citrate in the water phase on certain emulsions, and it won't break it. However, in this particular emulsion, it's reacting with something in the water phase and previously split my emulsion into two separate phases, so it now lives in phase C.
