Brian Jones placed a 20-word ad in a Soho listing sheet in 1962 and built the biggest band in rock. By 1969, they told him to leave.
Most Brian Jones documentaries chase the death mystery. This one argues something different: Jones wasn't destroyed by drugs or betrayal — he was made obsolete by the machine he set in motion.
Brian Jones founded the Rolling Stones in 1962. He named the band after a Muddy Waters song, recruited Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, booked the first show at the Marquee Club in London, and taught Jagger harmonica. He played sitar on "Paint It, Black," marimba on "Under My Thumb," dulcimer on "Lady Jane." He was the most versatile musician the Stones ever had.
But Jones couldn't write songs. When manager Andrew Loog Oldham pushed Jagger and Richards to write originals, Jones lost his creative authority. When Anita Pallenberg left Jones for Richards in 1967, the power shift became visible to everyone. By 1969, Jones's contributions to Let It Bleed amounted to congas and autoharp — and the band let him go on June 8th at Cotchford Farm in Surrey.
Less than a month later, on July 3, 1969, Jones was found dead in his swimming pool. He was 27. The coroner ruled it death by misadventure. The mystery has never been resolved.
But the real story ended on June 8th — the day the founder learned that building something great and leading it are two entirely different skills.
