Preventing Falls: Protecting Your Independence and Well-Being
Falls are a major concern, especially for older adults, leading to severe consequences such as hip fractures, serious injuries, permanent disabilities, and a loss of independence for both you and your loved ones. Our RUHS Fall Prevention program is dedicated to helping you reduce the risk of falls and maintain your quality of life.
Understanding the Risks:
Falls can lead to life-changing injuries like hip fractures and head trauma.
The emotional impact of falls extends to caregivers and family members.
Statistics show that annually, 1 in 3 elderly adults experience a fall, and 1 in 5 falls result in a broken bone or head trauma (CDC).
Steps to Decrease Fall Risks:
Talk to Your Doctor:
Discuss any unsteadiness on your feet.
Review medications that cause drowsiness or dizziness.
Regular Health Checks:
Schedule regular vision and foot exams.
Exercise to improve balance, strength, and flexibility as per your doctor's advice.
Home Modifications for Safety:
Use non-slip rugs and install grab bars.
Ensure adequate lighting and remove clutter to prevent tripping hazards.
Medication and Fall Risks:
Certain medications and their interactions can increase fall risks.
It’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider about your medications to prevent falls.
Impact of Falls:
Fear of falling can lead to isolation and reduced activity.
Falls can necessitate prolonged care and emotionally strain caregivers and family members.
By paying attention to fall prevention and following guidance from your healthcare provider, you can significantly reduce the risk of falls and their associated impacts. Stay safe, stay active, and protect your independence with RUHS Fall Prevention.
