This animation simulates the TOI 1338 system. Animation 1 shows the orbit of the system, showing the red dwarf, TOI 1338 B and the Neptune-like exoplanet, TOI 1338b orbiting the bigger, F8 star in the center, TOI 1338 A. In animation 2, the top panel shows a visual of how transit looks like on TOI 1338 A as the red dwarf, TOI 1338 B and the exoplanet, TOI 1338b crosses in front of it. The bottom panel shows the light curve of the brightness of TOI 1338A, showing how the star and the exoplanet produces different transit depth and duration. Due to being closer to the main star, TOI 1338 B has a shorter orbital period and thus transits the main star more often than the exoplanet.
This animation was made by Fira Fatmasiefa (Astrophysics major, Class of 2023) for the EPS 109 course "Computer simulations with Jupyter notebooks" at the University of California, Berkeley: http://militzer.berkeley.edu/EPS109. It offers a general introduction to computer simulations for all science majors. Participants will use the Jupyter notebooks to perform calculations, design 3D graphics, and build on existing computer programs. No prior programming experience is required. The course teaches fundamental skills for scientists and helps students with future homework. It covers data processing techniques as well standard simulations methods including Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics. The algorithms are illustrated with a variety of applications in earth and planetary science as well as astronomy.
