Fall seed treat for the colorful Dark-eyed Junco.
The Dark-eyed Junco is one of North America's most common and widespread bird species, known for its distinctive white tail flashes and ground-foraging habits. A small sparrow relative, it measures about 5.5 to 6.3 inches in length and weighing just 0.6 to 1.1 ounces. The bird's name comes from its dark, inconspicuous eyes, which contrast with its generally pale bill. They've earned the nickname "Snowbird" because their arrival in many central and southern areas of the U.S. coincides with the start of winter. Juncos are primarily seed-eaters, with seeds from weeds, grasses, and cultivated plants making up about 75% of their year-round diet. They typically forage on the ground, often scratching or "kicking" at the leaf litter or snow with both feet simultaneously to uncover seeds. Most Dark-eyed Junco nests are built on or very close to the ground, often well-hidden under overhanging grass, logs or roots.
