Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg, and welcome to the World of Zenith. Today, I'll be your guide to the proper care, maintenance, and usage of your Zenith El Primero Sport. It's important to note that this automatic winding time piece can nevertheless be manually wound, should it run down. Simply take the crown and thread it out from its stem tube until it sits free against the flank of the case, with a slight margin such that it can turn easily without winding back into the threading. Turn it in a clockwise direction in this position between 20 and 30 times, until you see the constant seconds hand at 9 o'clock begin to advance or you see the balance on the case back begin to oscillate. At this point, you can screw the crown back down, put the watch on the wrist, and in the course of natural action on the wrist, the watch will wind itself via the automatic rotor.
However, should you wish to manually wind the watch to its full power reserve capacity of approximately 50 hours, simply continue turning the crown. This automatic winding timepiece features a bridal style main spring that will slip and prevent overwinding. You cannot overwind the timepiece. Now once you have the watch wound, if the time and date are correct, simply screw the crown down and resume use. However, when setting bear in mind certain unique features of the El Primero caliber. Unlike most caliber's, when the crown is pulled to the second position outboard of the winding position, you reach a point at which the watch actually sets its time. Most movements set the date in that second position. The El Primero sets the time.
This is critical, because you want to make sure that you don't accidentally pull the crown out all the way when the watch is between 8 PM and 4 AM and then turn, as this will simultaneously engage the quick set mechanism which rotates the date and try to advance it while the mechanism itself, the automatic jumper, is engaged through the night phase of the day. It's important to never try to change the date, which is set in the outer most crown position, between 8 PM and 4 AM. Always pull the crown out gently if you want to set the time during that period.
Once you've set the time at center, as referenced, the quick set for the date is the outermost position. You turn it clockwise to rapidly cycle, should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month. Once you've done this, screw the crown back into position because only in this position can it meet the watch's rated 200 meter water resistance, as advertised by the factory. It's also important to note that chronographs should always be actuated in a set sequence. Now this watch features screw-down chronograph pushers, so these two need to be screwed out for actuation and screwed back down after usage. When screwed out, the watch is stopped and started using the pusher at 2 o'clock. Always actuate the watch in the sequence of start, stop, and reset. Never attempt to reset the watch while it's running, as this can significantly damage the mechanism.
I've referenced the importance of always screwing the chronograph pushers and the crown back down, and there's a good reason for that. The watch does have a robust 200 meter water resistance, as advertised by the factory, but this is only true when the crows are all screwed down into their position flush with the case. Moreover, none of the functions should ever be actuated while the watch is submerged, or even while there is water on the case flank, as this can bypass the seals and introduce moisture into the interior of the watch, which can cause catastrophic damage.
It's also important to note that the timepiece should be shielded from magnetism. Just as water handling is significant, so too is handling in proximity to strong magnets. More of these exist than you may suspect, as high powered wiring looms at work, sub-woofers, speakers, and refrigerator doors can all create magnetic fields that are sufficient to magnetize the metallic hairspring of the watch. If the hairspring becomes magnetized, the watch will keep erratic time.
Additional handling restrictions should be handled with respect to high impact sports, such as horseback riding, mountain biking, golf, shooting, or batting, as these shocks can damage a traditional mechanical movement. Avoid these activities while wearing the watch. Finally, it's important to note that with respect to factory service, a Zenith movement should only be services with an authorized Zenith service center, either an independent authorized retailer or a factory-owned boutique, as these agencies alone have the trained personnel, the specialized equipment, and the original factory replacement parts to maintain the integrity of your watch as an instrument and an investment. Moreover, only these agencies can back the work and parts with an original Zenith factory service warranty.
