U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi made a passionate defence of President Donald Trump when she came under heavy fire from Democrats during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, with representatives criticizing the Department of Justice’s handling of the Epstein files.
Bondi repeatedly attempted to shout down Democrats during the hours-long tumultuous hearing, which saw Rep. Jamie Raskin accuse Bondi of “coddling perpetrators” while leaving names of victims unredacted.
Raskin accused Bondi of “staggering incompetence, cold indifference and jaded cruelty towards more than 1,000 victims raped, abused and trafficked.”
When Rep. Pramila Jayapal demanded that Bondi turn to the victims of late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and apologize, the attorney general attempted to steer the debate toward former attorney general Merrick Garland and accused Democrats of “theatrics.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Ted Lieu accused Bondi of lying under oath when she said there was “no evidence” Trump had committed any crime. Lieu referred to a witness statement given to the FBI’s National Threat Operation Centre containing allegations of rape against Trump. He called for Bondi to immediately resign.
