Sonic Acts hosted artist Leslie García at the Spatial Sound Studio in Rotterdam. A multidisciplinary artist from Mexico, Leslie García’s practice sits at the intersection of contemporary art, digital media, and sound. Her work investigates the relationships between science, technology, and perception, creating installations, performances, and interfaces that act as environments for sensory exploration and critical speculation.
Over the course of her stay in November 2025, García worked on adapting a multichannel sound composition Saturn Spectrums. In the piece, García engages with the archive of Afrofuturist composer and philosopher Sun Ra, housed at the Electronic Music Studios in Chicago. Working with media archaeology and sonic computation, García blurs the lines between memory and machine improvisation, in attempts at re-sounding Sun Ra’s mythopoetic legacy. In this interview, conducted at the Spatial Sound Studio, Sonic Acts spoke with García on using tape recording as an instrument, playing sound as mediating energy, and transforming the archive into a new materiality.
Originally commissioned by the University Museum of Contemporary Art, MUAC, in Mexico City, Saturn Spectrums is part of the Listening Room – a spatial sound exhibition at Zone2Source during Sonic Acts Biennial 2026.
