It was March 16, 1521 when the Portuguese navigator landed in Homonhon Island on his voyage to circumnavigate the earth and empirically prove that the earth is not flat. After his rough voyage crossing the Pacific Ocean, he and his crew had to rest and replenish their supplies in this previously unoccupied island not knowing what's next on the days to come when he was killed by Datu Lapu Lapu in Mactan Island, Cebu on April 4, 1621.
These days, Homonhon Island is still hitting the local news headlines on the issues of mining Chromite ore.
