Описание: St. Croix Hair Sheep Breeders members meet with Dr. Phil Sponenberg, DVM, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Genetics in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at Virginia Tech. Dr. Sponenberg discusses the origin of St. Croix sheep as a landrace breed with a consistent type but some variance in color. He describes the sheep selected for the original importation to the United States as primarily white and polled, but reminds us that those sheep also carried genetic markers for color, scurs, and possibly even horns that were just hidden. He discusses the utility of these traits, and the possible relationships those traits have with other traits such as fertility, size, and prolificacy. Dr. Sponenberg discusses the possibility of using genetic testing to identify purebred but not registered sheep. Finally, the group participates in a question/answer session with discussion.
