Honoring the life and service of WWII Veteran George Summers
In the Price of Freedom we honor and remember the life and service of World War II veteran George Summers.
Mr. Summers passed away on June 2nd.
We told you his story on the Price of Freedom back in late 2020.
He grew up in Marion County during the Depression, but lived in Rossville for the last 74 years.
Mr. Summers was drafted in 1942.
He was in the Army Air Force, and later moved to the combat engineers.
He told me he spent the war building landing strips.
He told me about a conversation he had with his mother right before he left.
"She just broke down. I told her I said, 'I'm going to promise you one thing. I will be back.' I didn't understand, you know. I didn't realize what I was saying, but I believe the Lord kept my promise to her because I come back," Mr. Summers said.
It was an honor that he would allow us to tell his incredible story.
George Summers came home from the war in November 1945.
He was 102 years old when he passed away.
