(10 Nov 2013) UN nuclear chief Yukiya Amano headed to Tehran on Sunday as part of efforts to probe suspicions that Iran worked secretly on nuclear weapons.
Those attempts have been stymied for nearly two years by arguments over what can be seen, and who can be interviewed how many times by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) experts.
The trip comes shortly after Iran and six world powers ended separate talks in Geneva that failed to seal a deal that would cap some of Tehran's nuclear work in exchange for selective lifting of sanctions on its economy.
All sides reported progress in those negotiations, however, as the more cooperative attitude of Iran's new leadership raises hopes of a breakthrough.
"As you know, Iran presented a new proposal last month that includes practical measures to strengthen cooperation and dialogue and we aim to build on it," Amano told reporters at Vienna Airport.
Iran insists it does not seek nuclear weapons and says its reactors are only for electricity and medical applications.
The US and others are considering easing economic sanctions in return for a possible suspension in 20 per cent enrichment, but the Geneva talks reportedly foundered when France insisted on tougher constraints on a reactor that will make plutonium when completed, and on parts of Iran's uranium enrichment programme.
The negotiations are set to continue next week.
