In this series of 2.75 videos (named after my MIT class 2.75 Precision Machine Design ) I present the material that is in my on-line free book “FUNdaMENTALs of Design”.

So where did all this material come from?

As the Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering, in in late 1990’s I started writing “FUNdaMENTALs of Design” to be a free publicly available design book, and then further developed the material while on sabbatical in 2000 as an Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury. (https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/engage/e...)

The videos were then produced and edited by the excellent team at Giro Studios (https://girostudio.com/) and MIT’s Office of Open Learning senior video producers Brett Paci and Lana Scott. As can be seen in the E videos, Lana was also an excellent soulgeekmate on the Ethics series!

All here was made possible/catalyzed by: 1) My department head, Prof. Nam Suh who had the vision for each MIT ME core class to create new learning materials, 2) The generosity and vision of Neil and Jane Pappalardo to support development of academic materials that are freely available, and 3) the bequest by John Angus Erskine to enable up to 70 visiting international senior academics to lecture at the University of Canterbury each year to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and 4) Prof. Sanjay Sarma who ran MITx for many years, as it was MITx that asked that the videos be created from “FUNdaMENTAL”

This is the true spirit of teaching and learning, to not only document what is known and add to it, but to pass it on in a free widely available form to help others learn how to never stop learning. By encouraging this to the highest degree, I think MIT and the University of Canterbury are among the very best universities in the world.
