16mm color Kodachrome film. Film depicts the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad's first diesel Prospector.
The original Prospector utilized two lightweight, stainless steel, two-car trainsets built by the Budd Company. Each car was equipped with small, 192-horsepower Hercules diesel engines. The overnight service ran between Denver and Salt Lake City via the Moffat Tunnel. Service began on November 17, 1941.
The Prospector was ultimately unsuccessful. The primary issues were
insufficient power and capacity issues. The relatively small Hercules diesels were inadequate for the D&RGW's steep and challenging mountain grades in the Rockies. The trains also had limited capacity (44 seats and 18 beds), and demand often exceeded this, leading to overcrowding. To learn more about this film, please visit:
