What is “Biocultural”? A Conversation with the Biocultural Initiative of the Pacific (BCIP)
The Biocultural Initiative of the Pacific (BCIP) leadership invites students, faculty, and community members to a seminar introducing the Initiative's history, vision, and evolving work. This session will provide an overview of how “biocultural” has been defined across academic, Indigenous, and community contexts. The BCIP understands and applies biocultural frameworks in Hawaiʻi and the broader Pacific today through multiple lenses, including relationships between people and place, Indigenous knowledge systems, language, stewardship, and governance. This seminar will share snapshots of the BCIP’s current efforts, including teaching, student engagement, research, funding initiatives, and this new seminar series. Participants are invited to engage in conversation, reflect on working definitions of biocultural, and offer feedback to help shape the future direction of the BCIP.
