Germans vertical VTOL Jets from the 70ths
Becouse of politcal reasons the 3 german VTOL Jets projects where stopped, so only the prototpy 's exist. The USA was afraid that they would have to buy it later, when the germans start so early with building VTOL Jets.
DO31 (VTOL Transporter)(first flight 1967)one of the first jets with fly by wire)
and the german EWR VJ 101 (Fighter) (first flight 1963), (first VOTL Jet with Tilt-Jet-Engines similiar like the 40 years later developed V22-Osprey which has Tiltrotors instead of jet-engines.)

Germany had developed 3 vertical Jets in the 70ths, when the first prototyps where flown, the US Airforce maked a joint venture to get the technic,
inspireation for the 40 years later developed V22 Osprey, which is still, smaller and slower and has a lower range then the DO31 from the 1967 and can not carry so many Troops like the DO31
When the Project didnt would have been stopped 1970, the V22 Osprey would have never been build. Imagine the DO31 after 50 years in service and development in the year 2020.
So even half a century later the DO31 is the worlds first and only vertical Transport Jet.
The 40 years later developed Osprey ( a Tiltrotor) is a combination of a DO31 and the EWR VJ 101 (which had the first Tilt-Jet-Eninges) a technic which was then used later for the Osprey but not with jet-enigenes, with Rotors) Here, in the use of the Tillrotos very good visible , that the technic was from the EWR VJ 101 which had Til-Jet-Engines, to save editional hube-Engines.)
