Batı Karadeniz'in incisi, Fatih'in Gözbebeği Amasra (Sesamos), Paphlagonia'nın önemli şehirlerinden biridir. MÖ 4. yüzyılda Darius döneminde Büyük İskender Perslere son verdiğinde, Darius'un yeğeni Amastris'i kraliyet ailesinin geri kalanıyla birlikte esir almış ve onu yeğeni Craterius ile evlendirmiştir.
