In April 2022 I dug up a clump of volunteer plum (Prunus) trees in my yard. I pruned and replanted the clump into my bonsai grow bed, where it has grown the last three years.
I found what I heard from others about transplanting trees to be true: the first year in the ground the trees 'slept' (didn't grow much), the second year they 'crept' (grew a bit more), and the third year they 'leapt' (lots of growth last growing season).
In this video (March 2025), I cut off some of the clump that I don't want to keep and dig the two remaining trees, so that they don't become too established in the ground. After a little root pruning, I replant them. The plan is to continue to train them in the ground for the next two to three years.
