Today on our 2017 Dodge Durango we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, offering the 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening. It's part number is 75713. This is what our hitch is going to look like installed. Visually from behind the vehicle we'll see the side plates, we're going to see the cross tube coming over to the receiver tube opening. With this being a Class III hitch it's going to be extremely versatile, tons of accessories that you can put in here, cargo carriers, bike racks, of course ball mounts for towing trailers. There's any number of things that usually make it in a Class III version, so you should be able to take advantage of it. To secure all those items in place going to have the pinhole closer to the front of the vehicle.
That's our 5/8ths diameter pinhole. You've got plenty of room there for Class III accessories, whether it's just a pin and clip, maybe a locking hitch pin or even anti-rattle device. One of those anti-rattle devices is called the J Pin Stabilization System, that's the only time you're going to use that smaller hole located closer to the rear of the vehicle. The end of the hitch is just past the outer edge of the bumper. I don't think you're going to have to worry about bumping into it or anything like that, and it's got the nice rounded re-enforcement collar on it there. If you plan on doing wiring they do have a nice bracket that's welded onto the hitch when it comes out.
You can see the three pre-drilled holes on there will allow you to attach a bracket, something similar to part number 18144, and then you just slide your four volt into that, or you can connect a seven volt to that. Whatever you wanted to do. The safety chain connection points are kind of a plate style here. They're really large and open, so you shouldn't have issues with getting your chains connected there at all. The hitch is going to offer a 900 pound tongue weight capacity, that's the maximum downward force that we can put at the receiver tube opening. It has a 6,000 pound gross trailer rating.
That would be the total weight of your trailer, and then anything you we're to load up on it. It is rated for use with weight distribution, if you do that we're going to stay at the same 900 pounds for the tongue weight rating, but the gross trailer weight rating, it's going to go up to 7,500 pounds. Of course you'll want to check the owners manual on the Durango, you'll see what it's rated for. Then just use whichever of those numbers is the lowest. A couple measurements that you'll find helpful when selecting your ball mounts, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers we'll be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, we've got about 14 and 3/4s of an inch. Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outer most edge of our bumper it's about an inch and a half.
To begin our installation we need to get our spare tire lowered down. You're going to want to open up the rear panel here. There'll be a little cap right down here on the floor, just pop that out. In this area you're going to have your tire tools, we've got one, just a universal that we use here. You just place it on there and get it lowered down. We're going to be using the factory bolts that are inside edge of the frame rail here. This is our driver's side, we've got them in the exact same spot over on the passenger side. We'll use a 21 millimeter and get these backed out. Now we're ready to raise our hitch up into position, you'll have to guide is past the plastic here for the spare tire, kind of where it fits in there. Then kind of rotate it up and in. Then we're just going to replace the bolts that we removed previously. They're going thread right back into those weld nuts. Get one started on that side, one started on this side and then we'll just let the hitch rest there while we get the rest of them in place. Then we'll snug those down. Then we can grab our torque wrench and torque them down to the specifications listed in our instructions. With our bolts torqued down we'll get our spare tire put back into place. We'll just replace our cap and hit the road. With our spare tire back in place that completes the installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 75713 on our 2017 Dodge Durango.
