The Work.
"A major opera of the early 18th century, Ariodante, composed in 3 acts, occupies a special place in the long London career of Handel, who tirelessly deployed his talents as composer, conductor and impresario to impose his aesthetic choices on a passionate and sometimes partisan public. It was in this climate of incessant struggle that Handel undertook the composition of Ariodante, first performed in Covent Garden's brand-new theater on January 8, 1735, to compete with a new troupe featuring the famous castrato Farinelli." The Story.
"Prince Ariodante is to marry the daughter of the King of Ecosse, Ginevra. He is falsely convinced of his fiancée's betrayal by the scheming Duke Polinesso, aided and abetted by Dalinda. Ariodante flees the Court in despair. Ginevra, unjustly accused, loses her mind when her father disowns her. Believed dead, the young Prince witnesses an assassination attempt on Dalinda, who has become an embarrassing witness for the deceitful Polinesso. He begins to realize that appearances have certainly deceived him. His brother, Lurcanio, challenges Polinesso to a duel, and before he dies, Polinesso confesses to his scheme. Ginevra, definitively cleared of suspicion, regains her sanity and is finally able to marry Ariodante." Translated from Les Arts Florissants
