Spanning the fields of north Georgia and the heights above the Tennessee River, this park preserves the story of one of the Civil War’s most decisive campaigns. At Chickamauga, fierce fighting in September 1863 marked one of the conflict’s bloodiest battles — a Confederate victory that pushed Union forces back into Chattanooga. But the story didn’t end there.

High above the city, battles for control of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge turned the tide. The Union victory in Chattanooga opened the Deep South to further advances and became a pivotal turning point in the war.

Through preserved battlefields, towering monuments, and sweeping mountain views, Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park honors the soldiers who fought here and invites us to reflect on the cost, complexity, and consequences of civil war.
