Madakasira Fort – The Sleeping Lion of Andhra Pradesh
Hidden in the hills of Sri Sathya Sai District, Madakasira Fort stands like a sleeping lion watching over the land. This historic hill fort, often called the “Gibraltar of Andhra Pradesh”, has witnessed more than 500 years of battles, rulers, and history.
The journey to the top of Madakasira Fort is not just a trek — it is like walking through centuries of history.
The fort was originally built in 1492 by Siruda Rangappa Nayaka, a local chief who chose this strategic hill for its natural defense. Standing almost 2936 feet above sea level, the fort offered a powerful view of the surrounding lands, making it extremely difficult for enemies to attack.
Over the centuries, many powerful kingdoms fought to control this mighty fort.
During the 17th century, Madakasira was ruled by local chiefs under the Vijayanagara Empire. Later, the fort came under the control of the Bijapur Sultanate.
In the 18th century, the Maratha warrior Murari Rao captured the fort and strengthened its defenses, turning it into a strong military base.
History continued to change when in 1762, Hyder Ali of Mysore, with the support of the Portuguese, captured Madakasira Fort after intense battles.
Later, between 1792 and 1800, the fort came under the Nizam of Hyderabad. Finally, in 1800, the British East India Company took control of the fort, marking another turning point in its long history.
Today, Madakasira Fort is a paradise for trekkers, history lovers, and explorers.
The fort features:
• Seven massive gateways
• Singe-Moothi watchtower
• Rani Mahal (Queen’s Palace)
• Horse stables and storage areas
• Sri Ramalingeswara Temple
From the top of the hill, the view is breathtaking. Cool winds, wide landscapes, and the silent ruins make you feel like you have stepped back in time.
The hill itself resembles a sleeping lion, which is why the place is also known as Simhagiri.
If you love trekking, history, and hidden places in Andhra Pradesh, Madakasira Fort should definitely be on your list.
This trek is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Rayalaseema region
