Hello. This is Jack from tofluency.com, and in this English lesson you going to learn about the phrasal verb: go off. So, I'm going to show you the different ways that you can use this phrasal verb and give
you examples so that you understand it, but first I'm going to show you how I used it...

Yeah, it's a long day, it's a very long day and the alarm goes off at 5:45 at the moment. In the video, I said, "Yeah, it's a long day. It's a very long day and the alarm goes off at 5:45 at the moment." So, in this case, go off means that the alarm makes a noise to wake you up. So, my wife's alarm goes off at 5:45 in the morning - really early in the morning and it makes the noise so that she wakes up.

Here is another example, That car alarm has been going off all day." So, in this case, the alarm in the car is making a noise. The fire alarm went off today at school. So, you can see a picture of a fire alarm and if a fire alarm goes off it means that that alarm makes a noise.

Here is another way that you can use this phrasal verb: I think the milk has gone off. Can you smell it? In this case, it means that the milk isn't fresh so you can think about food and drink going off and this is when it isn't fresh any longer. In American English, they say go bad - I think the milk has gone bad.

We also use go off in this way: the bomb went off at 9:35 a.m. and this means that the bomb exploded so you'll hear this on the news or read it in newspapers.

And finally, we can also use it like this: I'm going off this show a
little. I'm going off this show a little - and this just means to start to dislike something, so, I'm starting to dislike this television show - I'm going off this show a little.
