This is a longer video that the other one.
It is truly tragic to hear about the loss of the John Mathews house on February 6, 2026. For a small town like Denmark, Maine, the loss of a historic landmark is felt by the entire community.
Here is a chronological history of the farm, corrected for the 1842 construction date:
Chronology of the Davis-Wentworth-Mathews Farm
· The Davis Foundation (1842–1910): Around 1842, Josiah W. Davis purchased the parcel and constructed the farm buildings shortly thereafter. Josiah and his wife, Elizabeth Amory Stickney, established the homestead and raised their four children there, anchoring the property in the mid-19th century.
· The Wentworth Era (1910–1939): Alvin Scott Wentworth purchased the farm in 1910. He and Isabelle H. (McPherson) Wentworth raised five children on the land, continuing the property's legacy as a family-centered farm for nearly three decades.
· The Hall Succession (1939–1980): In 1939, the farm stayed within the family when Alvin’s daughter, Cora Belle (Wentworth) (Stockford) Hall, took ownership.
· The Mathews Era (1980–2026): On July 31, 1980, John T. and Eleanor G. Mathews purchased the farm from Cora Belle. For 46 years, they served as the stewards of this historic landmark.
