Cassels Lake, connected via portages and waterways to the Montreal River system, was part of Indigenous travel and later logging routes.

In Anishinaabemowin, lake names carry meaning tied to places and stories.Cassels Lake is Kaawaabakooshkaadeyaa  [kaw'waa'buck'koosh'ki'day'yaw], The place of the white or polar bear hills.

White Bear Forest, adjacent to these waterways, provided old-growth stands and habitat.

Logging in early 20th century used routes through Cassels Lake to transport timber downstream. Over time, conservation efforts recognized the value of preserving stands in White Bear Forest; many portage trails still exist, combining lake and forest pathways.

For decades, Cassels Lake served as a key artery in Temagami’s logging era.

Logs cut from surrounding forests were floated down Cassels Lake and through a chain of connected waterways, including Rabbit Lake, Snake Island Lake, and the Matabitchuan River, which descends sharply toward the Montreal River. From there, timber could travel onward into the Ottawa River watershed—part of a vast natural network that linked Northern Ontario forests to mills far downstream, even as far as Hawkesbury or Montreal in Quebec.

These logging routes followed the natural flow of water, aided by dams, booms, and sluiceways built to guide timber over rapids and through narrows. The system was both ingenious and dangerous.

Men known as river drivers or log drivers balanced on moving logs, steering them through the twists of this rugged terrain. Today, these same routes are retraced by canoeists and remembered as part of the living legacy of Temagami's industrial past.

With the construction of a lumber mill and townsite on Cassels Lake, the timber could be processed locally and shipped out by rail.


The White Bear Forest is a remnant of the Gillies Brothers timber limits. The mill managers wife was very fond of the tall timber skyline. That and the fact that the rugged terrain made logging uneconomical led to the eventual conservation status of this area.

Ecologically, Cassels Lake and connected waterways support fish habitats and mudflats used by waterfowl.

Forested corridors along these routes nurture wildlife movement. Historically, canoeists navigated these waters for resource gathering and trade; logs floated or were hauled along portages. Today, the White Bear Forest trails trace some of these old paths. Recognizing this layered history deepens appreciation for interwoven aquatic and forest landscapes.
