City of San Fernando in one sentence:
If you like affordable prices, the East Valley, a local/independent government, and a strong Latinx vibe, then San Fernando is for you.

Behind me is the Lopez Adobe, one of the oldest residences in the San Fernando Valley.
It is in the city of San Fernando, a couple of miles from Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana where it got its name.
The city of San Fernando or the Mission City was the first city in the San Fernando Valley.
Founded in 1874, it was known for its produce, especially olives and citrus.
It has its own local governing board, police force, and local laws. You cant even sell a house in San Fernando without the city coming to inspect it.
While all of the surrounding areas agreed to be annexed into the city of Los Angeles in order to have access to the Los Angeles Aqueduct, San Fernando had a plentiful groundwater supply and remained independent. To this day, it treats and maintains its own water supply.
It also has its own police force.
The city has approximately 25,000 people, with just under 80% citizens, lower than the national average of 93.2%
The median age is just over 34 years old.
The sales tax rate is 10%.
Paula Abdul and George Lopez both spent their early years in this area.
The heart of San Fernando is on Maclay. Developers are trying to turn it into a trendy promenade, and you will see the progress. IT’s an awesome fusion of traditional Mexican values and new American trendiness.
The Truman House Tavern and the San Fernando Brewing Co. where you can buy food from various scheduled Food Trucks like Burnt to a Crisp Food Truck and knock down a beer in their patio area. As San Fernando is less than 2 1/2 square miles, it flows into the surrounding areas of Mission Hills, Sylmar, Lake View Terrace and Pacoima.
There are many places to work out here including at San Fernando Strength and Conditioning, Get Sweat, Uplifted Athletes, or the San Fernando Recreation Park and Aquatic Center where you can join a swim team. It’s also open for recreational swimming.
Favorite restaurants are Rosarito Fish Market, Papa Juan’s Baja Grill, and Heavenly Pancakes
For shopping, there is the San Fernando Mall, San Fernando Plaza or Mall Fashion.
Jobs can be found in manufacturing, retail trade, health care, construction and office jobs.
Besides being close to three major freeways, the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station serves the city on the Antelope Valley Line.
The city is also set to become the northern “end of the line” for the valley’s first light rail, the East San Fernando Valley Transit Corridor, by 2027.
Schools in the area include San Fernando Middle School and the San Fernando Institute for Applied Media, a pilot school developed by principal Pearl Arredondo who gave a Ted Talk in 2013 entitled: From Gangland Daughter to Star Teacher. Students from the school recorded public service announcements that were then played aloud on the trolleys which circulated through town.
Falling birth-rates and an “aging middle-class, white” population who once comprised a large percentage of this area, have caused a demographic shift and movement into other parts of the valley. 93% of the population is Hispanic, with the largest group being White (Hispanic).
14.7 of the population are in the poverty range.
Yes, San Fernando is changing, but there are also people working to preserve its history and culture. If you like a laid-back vibe, San Fernando is worth checking out.
