Reported speech is used when we tell someone what another person said, without repeating their exact words. Instead of using quotation marks, we change the sentence structure, often shifting the verb tense, pronouns, and time expressions. For example, "I am happy," she said becomes "She said that she was happy." This back shifting happens because the original speech occurred in the past. Understanding these changes helps improve both written and spoken English communication.
