The initial discovery, announced in 2023, was of a single ritual text on a clay tablet that contained a passage in the previously unknown "language of Kalašma." However, since then, a much larger body of work has been identified. A study by Professor Daniel Schwemer has now deciphered 174 tablets containing the Kalašma language. These additional tablets, which were also part of the massive archive of nearly 30,000 cuneiform tablets found at Boğazköy-Hattusha, provide a far richer understanding of the language.
Unlike the initial ritual text, these tablets are said to contain a variety of information, including texts on daily life and celebrations. This wealth of material is crucial for linguists, as it allows for a more comprehensive analysis of the language's grammar, vocabulary, and its relationship to other Anatolian languages like Luwian. This much larger corpus of texts means that the "language of Kalašma" is not just a passing mention in a single ritual, but a well-attested language with a significant number of surviving documents, offering an unprecedented look into the culture and society of the people who spoke it. The publication of these texts is a major development that will undoubtedly shape our understanding of ancient Anatolian history for years to come.
