In the Philippines, I live on a lot less and enjoy a lot more. My cost of living, both here in Mamatid, south of Manila, as well as on the Leyte and Southern Leyte border, has averaged $250 a month as a single person living a safe, top notch, and comfortable lifestyle. That’s the best cost of living that I know of in the world, as for a safe, friendly, and English speaking country.
My life drastically improved after I moved here in 2018 from the United States. Before, I was working full time in NYC, making good money, yet like roughly 60% of Americans, I was barely surviving payday to payday.
It’s now 2024 and my life is awesome. I’ve been mostly semi-retired since moving here seven years ago. I fully retired earlier this year and have been living on savings. My social security retirement begins in January, 2025. Had I remained in America, I wouldn’t have been able to afford to retire on Social Security alone. But here in the Philippines, my social security pension is much more than I need to pay my bills, so I will actually be living a very privileged lifestyle as a retiree, while saving money for a rainy day.
Here in the Philippines, I have a beautiful social life too, eat better, live in a beautiful apartment, and have always had money left over after the bills were paid to enjoy more of what life has to offer. To see my apartment, check out this video:

Acquiring a low cost of living in the Philippines is not a guarantee, it’s a process. To learn how to achieve the right mindset and get yourself set up in the Philippines with a low cost of living, check out this video:

For myself, the most difficult thing I had to overcome to acquire a low cost-of-living was to stop overspending. I had always considered myself to be frugal, but I wasn’t frugal enough. I had to learn how to live like a frugal Filipino, not like a frugal American consumer. I had to learn to stop spending my money like it was growing on trees, and stop handing out my money like it was candy.
