Are rapid onset drying events escalating forest fires across India’s ecoregions?

Rapid onset drying events, often referred to as flash droughts, are emerging as a major driver of ecological stress and wildfire risk across India. This video explores a nationwide analysis of 43 Indian ecoregions (1979–2023) to understand how accelerated drying influences forest fire occurrence across diverse landscapes.
Using a four-criteria framework based on evaporative stress, the study identifies strong regional and seasonal patterns in rapid drying events and reveals that nearly 80% of ecoregions show increasing forest fire trends in recent decades. Mountainous, high-altitude, and semi-arid regions exhibit particularly strong links between rapid moisture loss and fire outbreaks. The findings highlight how even short-lived drying episodes can trigger long-lasting ecological impacts, underscoring the urgent need for integrated drought–fire management strategies tailored to India’s varied ecosystems.
