One major cultural practice helped shape Sylhet’s iftar economy:

➡️ The tradition of sending iftar from a daughter’s family to her in-laws during Ramadan.

This long-standing social custom increased the need for large, prepared iftar meals, especially dishes like Akhni. Over time, families began buying food instead of cooking everything at home .

👉 Restaurants prepare 40 to 60 types of iftar items daily

Akhni remains the star item and is even sold by the kilogram during Ramadan .
