A series of powerful earthquakes has shaken Afghanistan within just six days, killing over 2,200 people and injuring nearly 4,000 across dozens of villages. Rescue work has been extremely difficult because of the country’s rough, mountainous terrain and frequent tremors that continue to rattle the region.

On 4th September, another 6.2-magnitude quake hit south-eastern Afghanistan, sending residents running from their shelters in fear. These back-to-back disasters have left thousands homeless and in urgent need of aid. The Taliban government has appealed for international support. India has already sent 21 tonnes of relief material, including tents, food, and medicines, to Kabul. Afghanistan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world because it sits on major fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet.
